Apple Unveils Home Kit

Apple,, began its WorldWide Developer Conference with news of its entry into the home-automation market with a new software platform, Home Kit.

The platform allows for a user to control lights, thermostats, security systems, and other connected devices from an iPad or iPhone. According to Apple executives, what separates Home Kit from the numbers of home-automation devices currently on the market is its ability to run those functions through a common network protocol. By placing devices into groups, a user can, for example, control all connected devices in a given room through one source.

Siri integration provides the user with voice activation capability. A person can enter a space and say, “Get ready for bed,” which will trigger the devices to perform such actions as dim the lights, lock doors, and lower the thermostat temperature.

Home Kit is a multi-use product which can work with iOS devices and is open to third-party device makers.

Rumors had been circulating for weeks leading up to the conference regarding what Apple would present at the conference. Speculation was Apple would finally unveil its answer to Google’s,, purchase of Nest and Samsung’s,, smarthome offerings of refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions.

According to Steve Federighi, vice president of software engineering at Apple, the company began working with home automation companies such as Honeywell,, Texas Instruments,, and Sylvania,, to bring “rationality” to the space.
