Retailers to Benefit from 5G Wi-Fi

4/15/2014

A more personalized experience for customers of retailers and public venue operators is on the way courtesy of a new 5G Wi-Fi SoC (system-on-chip) developed by Broadcom Corp., www.broadcom.com.

The BCM43462 SoC will contain Broadcom’s new AccuLocate technology which provides sub-meter accuracy on exact physical locations. Unlike RSSI (received signal strength indicator) technology that fluctuated depending on such variables as crowd size or temperature, AccuLocate uses FTM (fine timing measurement) technology which can optimize location positioning regardless of the surroundings.

According to ABI Research, www.abiresearch.com, Senior Analyst Patrick Connolly, location-based technology installations will top 25,000 this year, while the number of mobile devices supporting indoor location will hit hundreds of millions inside of two years.

That comes as good news to component suppliers who will look to be major players in the indoor location market, which analysts predict will hit $4 billion by 2018 thanks to demand for such services by shopping malls, airports, department stores, and stadiums.

Due to the rapid growth of video use and the increase in the number of wireless devices, the hope is new innovations to coverage capabilities along with 5G Wi-Fi will extend the life of a battery, aid consumers in streaming content to mobile devices faster,  and help connect more wireless devices to home and enterprise networks.
