Black Friday Shoppers Favor Devices

11/28/2013

The Thanksgiving leftovers will barely be cold before consumers head out for holiday shopping. Research shows consumer electronic devices will be high on buyers’ lists when they hit the stores this year for Black Friday.

Gadgets are hot with consumers. According to Parks Associates, www.parksassociates.com, 60% of consumer-electronics holiday shoppers plan to purchase at least one device on Black Friday. But that’s not all—the research also shows many households began their holiday shopping before the week of Black Friday. Specifically, by now 71% of shoppers have already been plunking down their money for the latest tech.

Parks Associates says with shoppers starting early, the retailers that offered “pre-Black Friday” sales may have made a good decision. Some of the hot items this year include tablets, smartphones, game consoles, and flat-panel TVs. Overall, connected devices are some of the most desired items. Parks says tablets rank at the top of people’s wish lists, while smartphones are the most common replacement purchase this holiday season.

By the end of the year, 56% of U.S. broadband households intend to purchase at least one consumer-electronics device. Many shoppers are looking to purchase at least their second tablet. The research shows 13% of this year’s tablet shoppers are buying the device as an additional tablet.

The CEA (Consumer Electronics Assn.), www.ce.org, also foresees a strong holiday shopping season for technology. The organization says consumer confidence toward technology spending reached its highest level for the month of November since 2009. The CEA’s ICTE (Index of Consumer Technology Expectations) rose 2.7 points in November to reach 92.9. The index measures expectations about technology spending.

Overall, the CEA predicts 31% of consumers plan to buy electronics during the Thanksgiving weekend. CEA also lists tablets as a top item, saying 30% of consumers planning to purchase electronics expect to buy a tablet.

Devices that allow consumers to stay connected have proved their staying power as top purchases during the last few holiday seasons, and they show no signs of slowing down.
