What makes Garmin’s latest fitness watch, the fenix, stand out this holiday season? The company says it has harnessed the GPS technology for which Garmin is famous and applied it to its new functionality-packed watch. The GPS-enabled device has a built-in altimeter, barometer, and compass, meaning you can gather realtime data about metrics such as elevation, air pressure, and direction in addition to the normal stuff (distance, pace, and calories burned). The tough timepiece is built to withstand the elements; its mineral-glass lens will even resist scratches to keep it looking nice. Speaking of looking nice, this watch represents a trend toward sleeker-looking fitness devices.

fenix doesn’t lack in the connectivity department, either. It uses ANT and Bluetooth technologies to wirelessly communicate with your smartphone, other compatible Garmin devices, and add-on sensors such as heart-rate monitors, bike speed/cadence sensors, and external temperature sensors (all sold separately). The device keeps track of up to 1,000 waypoints, it’s waterproof up to 50 meters, and the battery will give you up to 50 hours of go time while in GPS mode.

Perfect for the outdoor adventurer—the hiker, mountain biker, etc.—fēnix provides the GPS data that will keep you in the know about where to go. Garmin has really kicked it up a notch with this offering; fenix offers the basic fitness-watch data, plus so much more. We love the ruggedness, the advanced functionalities, and of course, the connectivity.
