A Slick GPS Unit for the Tech-Savvy Traveler

Will navigation apps for smartphones eventually supplant standalone GPS units? Who knows. But for now, the Garmin nuvi 3790T can give you a bit of both worlds. Measuring 4.8" w x 2.9" h x .35" d, and weighing just four ounces, the device feels more like a smartphone than a PND (personal navigation device). But make no mistake about it; this unit is built for navigation.

At $449.99, the price tag on the Garmin nuvi 3790T is up there. But then again, this device packs some punch into its navigation assistance features. The first similarity to a smartphone or tablet is the rotate view feature; the screen changes orientation based on the way you hold the device. The multitouch display builds on the experience. In addition to the +/- buttons that allow you to zoom and rotate (much like other navigation units), you can change the map perspective to become more 3D by pressing and dragging with two fingers. You can pan the map view by touching and dragging with one finger. And this is just a sample of the touch-rich functionality.

Voice navigation on the device is not only convenient, but friendly too. When the speech icon turns green it is listening, and when it turns red it is thinking. Once you tell it your destination, a polite voice inquires: “Would you like to begin navigation?”

Yes. Yes, I would.

- Slick design unlike any other unit on the market

- Multitouch navigation

- Lane Assist and MyTrends
