Celebrating WoM2M Women of M2M
Peggy Smedley, Editorial Director
Women continue to make their mark in the world of technology. More women are moving up the ranks and claiming the most coveted positions in the most impressive tech-driven companies in the world. Women are eager to take their place at the head of the table. They are proving to be very comfortable in leadership positions. Women continue to make progress in a host of companies—currently holding 4.6% of Fortune 500 CEO positions and 4.6% of Fortune 1,000 CEO positions. Admittedly, everyone will espouse how great it is that women are more visible at the highest levels, but there's no denying that there's still some work to be done in the world of business.
But it is interesting to note that despite the lack of females in top leadership positions, women make up half of the U.S. workforce. Of that, about 25% represent the technology industry. In the past 50 years alone, women participation in the labor market has climbed more than 20 percentage points, while the U.S. gross domestic product has risen significantly. While the number could always be better, this does show how important a role women play in key areas of math, science, and technology, and this is just the beginning.
In retrospect, all of these top executives share a common goal. They realize that becoming a leader is much more than being put in a leadership role. It demands acquiring the necessary skills and adapting their style to achieve the requirements of the role they have been tasked to do. They do not talk of glass ceilings. They do not talk about a male–dominated world. They don't want to talk about a lack of support within their owncompanies. They prefer to talk about what they want to achieve and how they can build a more robust community for the upward trajectory of mobile women.
If there is another thing all of these successful women executives have in common it is that they truly enjoy what they do. You might even say they have a love for what they do. These women perform their jobs with such grace and undeterred aplomb. All of these female executives have mastered the art of blending the right mix of both masculine and feminine behaviors. This means balancing the right mix of gender-specific wisdom and self-awareness of leadership style.
Today to be a successful female business leader in this rapidly changing economic climate is praiseworthy and meritorious when mastering this balancing act with what is required. So it's no wonder these career-driven and tenacious ladies are held in the highest esteem by their peers. It's also true these powerhouse women are persistent despite the hurdles put before them.
The ladies who appear on the Women of M2M ranking are amazing examples of hard-working individuals looking at the big picture, always willing to take action. We are proud to say they continue to tear down gender barriers and other disparities in todays' workplace. It was no easy task to uncover these highly respected female business leaders who take their role very seriously and their confidence is actually their lifeblood.
